LEADER SERIES: MEET ALEX J

What does a typical day look like for Alex?

I’m usually up training clients early morning starting at 6:00AM. I’ll hit a workout mid afternoon, which is my ideal time to train, followed by either a few more clients or teaching a class. I might just relax in the evening or I might go play a sport or do something active.

What is your weekly training routine? How do you break up your training?

I make sure I hit the primary movements each week. Hip dominant (ie. deadlift) and knee dominant (ie. squats) movements for the lower body. Push and Push; horizontal and vertical movements for the upper body. From there I do a mix of bi-lateral and unilateral exercises in each of the movements. Conditioning will usually be a sport like basketball and also some movement skills like agility ladder drills or different plyos. For mobility I try to get into a yoga class once or twice a week along with foam rolling daily. Whatever else I can get in during the week is a bonus.

What advice do you give to your friends when they ask you how they should start making fitness a priority?

Create good habits. Be consistent. Try and improve even 1% each day. Have a program specific to you and your goals. Learn and understand what you are doing and why you are doing it. Make your time in the gym as efficient as you can.

What is your 10 year vision? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In terms of my career, I would like to create and run my own fitness facility. A space for training youth athletes and teams along with general population clients. A functional weight room area with a strip of turf track for movement skills. In regards to my fitness, in ten years I would still like to be playing sports like football and basketball at a high level.

How do you prioritize your mental health? What do you do (mentally) that helps you stay so committed and regimented towards achieving your goals?

I like to learn new skills or hobbies as a way to prioritize my mental health. Starting to do something that you are not very good at and seeing yourself get better and better at it is very gratifying. Most recently I started taking guitar lessons and I use it as a way of relaxing after an active day. What helps me to stay committed to my fitness goals is the want to compete at a high level in the sports I play. I’m continually trying to get stronger, faster, and more athletic.

What is your favourite REYAL product?

It’s hard to narrow it down to one product but I will give you my top 3.

Daily Face Moisturizer - the addition of SPF to help protect from the effects of the sun with the feeling of a great moisturizing cream is great.

Body Wash - the spa-like scent of the body wash makes me feel so fresh and so clean.

Multivitamin Pack - I love the ease and convenience of these multivitamin packs. Individually packed for each day makes it easy to be consistent and not forget.
